Madeleine Castaing | Bold & Stylish Decoration
Madeleine Castaing, the magician of decoration
Original, daring, often described as whimsical, Madeleine Castaing revolutionized the world of 20e century decoration. Her ambition? “To create poetry with furniture.” Defying the aesthetic conventions of her time, she imagined interiors where emotion took precedence over rigid decorative rules.
In her showroom on rue Jacob in Paris, she designed spaces like an artist composes canvases – without limits. In an era still corseted by tradition, she boldly mixed styles, historic periods, popular and bourgeois influences. Her interiors resonated like literary landscapes: echoes of Proust’s salons, the Tolstoyan atmospheres of Anna Karenina, infused with coquettish charm, Director rigor, and timeless classics. The flowing lines of Biedermeier, swirling foliage, wild animal prints… and blue, always blue. One shade would even become legendary: Castaing Blue, both luminous and profound.
You don’t reproduce Madeleine Castaing. You don’t copy her style. You pay tribute, you draw inspiration. And today, the greatest designers and editors still reinterpret her eclectic, counter-current vocabulary: Friedmann & Versace, Cordelia de Castellane, Dorothée Delaye, Edmond Petit, Tectona… all honour, in their own way, the enduring influence of the woman once nicknamed “the magician.”
The Castaing Legend
Madeleine Castaing didn’t just create interiors – she created stories. And her own life became part of her legend. A passionate reader of Russian literature, she fell in love at the age of 15 with art critic Marcellin Castaing (34 yo). She liked to tell the tale of how he “abducted” her – a story that ended happily when they married.
After a brief stint as a silent film actress, Madeleine entered the world of art alongside her husband. Together, they became collectors and patrons, most notably of Russian painter Chaïm Soutine. Her true artistic destiny unfolded when she acquired the Lèves estate near Chartres, a house she adored since childhood. There, she unleashed her creativity and began shaping interiors that would become nothing less than legendary.
A style like no other: between poetry and exuberance
The Castaing style is instantly recognizable. An intoxicating blend of classical rigor and flamboyant fantasy, it married Biedermeier curves, Directoire palmettes, animal prints, swirling foliage, and audacious colours. In her interiors, nothing was forbidden. Each room became a stage for contrasts, a theatre of bold juxtapositions, a living poem.
Her taste for extravagance and her fearless mix of genres continue to captivate today, inspiring the most visionary voices in contemporary design and interior architecture.
Norki and the spirit of Castaing
At Norki, we like to believe that some of our creations carry the very same spirit of freedom and exuberance that defined Madeleine Castaing. Like her, we embrace contrasts, emotion, and the refinement of rare materials.
• The Presto Bench, crafted in wood and curly velvet shearling, with flowing curves and embroidered animal motifs – a nod to Castaing’s emblematic prints.
• Our leopard fur cushions, echoing one of her most iconic signatures.
• The khaki fur throw edged with leopard, combining comfort with flamboyance.
• Our vintage rattan and bamboo lounge set with matching coffee table, recalling the materials that shaped her decorative universe.
• And finally, a show-stopper: a mid-century Scandinavian banana sofa, all sculptural exuberance and dressed in a deep blue that Madeleine herself would surely have embraced.
Through these creations, Norki pays tribute to Madeleine Castaing’s legacy: a vision of decoration as a total art form – poetic, audacious, and timeless – where each object is not only crafted but also imbued with history.
