Exceptional Summer Throws: The Lightness of Natural Fibers

Which plaid to choose for the warm season: materials, weights, finishes and compositions for a refined summer interior?
The plaid is too often thought of as a winter object. Yet in the most attentive houses — a Mediterranean residence, a chalet opened in July, a Parisian apartment with closed shutters — the plaid is a summer companion. It is draped at day's end over a cooled shoulder, protects from a night breeze on a terrace, dresses a banquette without burdening it. Summer, perhaps more than winter, demands a rightly chosen plaid: light, noble, timeless.
The summer plaid rests on three parameters: material, weight and size. Material determines lightness and breathability. Weight, measured in grams per square metre, determines fall and thermal comfort. Size, finally, determines use: banquette throw, armchair plaid, bed plaid, travel blanket.
Among noble materials, linen holds first place in the summer plaid. Drawn from a plant cultivated in Normandy, Flanders and Picardy since Antiquity, it possesses an unmatched capacity to absorb humidity, a natural thermoregulation, and that slightly rough hand which, over washings, becomes of an inimitable softness.
Washed linen, left deliberately crumpled, brings to contemporary interiors an elegant naturalness. Tightly woven linen, more structured, suits more classical residences.
Summer cashmere, woven in lighter constructions than winter cashmere, offers an exceptional compromise. Plaids in cashmere from the workshops of Johnstons of Elgin, the Italian manufactures of Biella, or Nepalese craftsmen, when they fall to 200 or 250 grams per square metre, yield a light envelopment that does not weigh. They must then be chosen in pale colourways — milk, chalk, stone, celadon, sky blue — to answer the summer light. The hand of light cashmere, almost aerial, brings a sensuality of rare finesse.
Silk, finally, proposes in its raw or shantung version plaids of remarkable softness. Less practical — tolerating frequent washing poorly — they find their place on guest-room beds, on banquettes in less-frequented drawing rooms, on boudoir ottomans. Paired with a back in Egyptian cotton or linen, they offer an unalterable freshness and elegance. Wild silk plaids from Bengali artisans, from the regions of Varanasi or Tamil Nadu, remain among the most refined pieces on the market.
The Maison d'Artisans Norki has long offered a summer plaid collection specifically conceived for the clear season. These plaids combine noble materials — linen, cashmere, wild silk — with more singular ones: more closely shorn Icelandic sheep, which brings a living surface without the weight of a complete hide; summer mink, shorter and silkier than winter mink, lined in raw silk; Tuscan lamb in a cream finish, lined in light cashmere; chinchilla as the border of a linen plaid, for the discreet preciousness of a selvedge.
Each plaid leaves our ateliers according to a rigorous process. The drawing is established piece by piece. The material is cut, sewn and hemmed by hand. Dual-material plaids — fur on one side, linen or silk on the other — are assembled with a precision requiring several hours of work per piece. Our standard dimensions are generous (130 x 170 cm for the classic model, 150 x 200 cm for bed plaids), but we also produce bespoke dimensions for wider beds or particular banquettes.
The choice of colours, for summer, follows a precise grammar. We favour off-whites (ivory, chalk, foam), warm beiges (sand, champagne, honey), mineral greys (stone, ash, pale slate) and a few noble pastel notes (celadon, sky blue, powdered rose). These tonalities chime with Mediterranean and Nordic summer palettes, and converse harmoniously with the pale woods and natural leathers that dominate these interiors.
The summer plaid is not an accessory: it is a companion. It is draped, placed, shared. It carries, within the house, a memory — of a terrace evening, a July nap, a journey taken. The Maison Norki, in conceiving it with the same care as a winter plaid, honours this simple truth: the objects we most love are those that cross the seasons without ever imposing, that accompany life without commanding it, and whose presence is signalled more by what they soothe than by what they show.
