Dutch Design
Dutch design of the 1960s reflects a balance between modernist rigor and experimental spirit. Heirs of De Stijl and functionalism, Dutch creators introduced more freedom, colour, and playfulness into their work. Furniture became modular and adapted to new urban lifestyles, while the graphic scene—led by figures such as Wim Crouwel and the Total Design studio—embraced a bold and typographic visual language. Balancing sobriety and creativity, this design captured the energy of the sixties and laid the foundations for the international reputation of contemporary Dutch design.
De Ster Gelderland, founded in 1936 by Koene Oberman. The company became best known for its collaborations with renowned designers such as Rob Parry, Jan des Bouvrie, and Henk Vos. These creators helped define the clean, functional, and modern style that made De Ster famous during the 1950s–1970s. The furniture produced by the brand — including armchairs, sofas, and tables — are now iconic pieces of 20th-century Dutch design, valued for their craftsmanship and timeless aesthetic.
