Søren Hansen

(1905 – 1977)

Søren Hansen was a Danish cabinetmaker and furniture designer, known for his key role within the family business Fritz Hansen A/S. The grandson of Fritz Hansen, the founder of the company in 1872, he received his training within the company before partnering with his brother Fritz in 1928.

In 1930, Søren Hansen designed the "Dan" chair, an iconic bentwood piece characterized by its backrest and rear legs forming a single continuous piece. This design combines both technical prowess and formal elegance, as highlighted by Karl Mang in his book History of Modern Furniture (1979), describing the Dan chair as "one of the few genuinely new innovations in the bentwood process."

In collaboration with the Fritz Hansen company, he designed furniture with a recognizable style — a large and high backrest, wooden armrests, an Art Deco style, Scandinavian with touches of modernity.

Throughout his career, Søren Hansen distinguished himself by his ability to modernize existing models while maintaining a balance between function and aesthetics. His creations reflect his artisanal craftsmanship and profound understanding of furniture architecture, establishing him as a significant figure in 20th-century Danish design.
