Ole Wanscher was a renowned Danish architect and furniture designer, celebrated as one of the most important figures of the Danish mid-century modern movement. Known for his refined, timeless style, Wanscher masterfully bridged classical inspiration and modern sensibility.
He studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts under the mentorship of Kaare Klint, a pioneer of Danish functionalism. From 1924 to 1927, Wanscher worked alongside Klint, and after Klint's passing, he succeeded him as a professor at the Academy — a role he held until his retirement in 1973.
Deeply influenced by 18th-century English furniture, Wanscher also drew inspiration from his travels to Greece, China, and Egypt. This cultural richness is reflected in iconic pieces like the Egyptian Stool (1960), a delicate and lightweight design that remains a landmark of Scandinavian craftsmanship.
Though committed to making high-quality design accessible to a wider audience through industrial production, Wanscher often collaborated with master cabinetmaker A.J. Iversen, resulting in exceptional handcrafted furniture. His most famous works include the Colonial Chair, widely considered a modern classic.
Published by P. Jeppesen and Fritz Hansen, Wanscher's creations continue to define Scandinavian interiors to this day, admired for their elegance, structure, and timeless appeal.
Norki is fortunate and deeply honored to feature in its vintage collection a rosewood coffee table signed by this designer.
