Peter hvidt

(1916 – 1986)

Peter Hvidt was a renowned Danish architect and designer, best known for his successful partnership with Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen. Together, they founded the Hvidt & Mølgaard studio in Copenhagen in 1944—a pioneering firm in modern Danish design, which they led until 1975.

From the outset, they revolutionized Scandinavian furniture with the stackable Portex chair, a groundbreaking innovation that paved the way for the industrial production of Danish furniture in the 1950s. The duo also collaborated with prestigious manufacturers such as Fritz Hansen, France & Son, and Søborg Møbelfabrik.

Their style, influenced by Charles and Ray Eames, combined functionality, elegance, and high-quality materials such as teak, leather, and rattan. In 1950, they created the iconic AX Chair, made from molded laminated wood, followed by the AX Table in 1951 and other coffee tables. Their modular approach extended to bookcases, lounge furniture, and other emblematic pieces of Scandinavian design.

Today, Hvidt & Mølgaard’s creations are featured in major international museums, including the Design Museum Denmark in Copenhagen, the MoMA in New York, the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne and in the vintage curation by Norki.

In the 1970s, they expanded their expertise to architecture alongside Hans Kristensen, designing numerous housing projects, office buildings, and industrial structures throughout Denmark.
