Originally trained as a naval architect in Odense, Kurt Østervig soon turned to furniture design, combining his passion for wood with functional aesthetics. After working at the renowned E. Knudsen studio in the 1930s and 40s, he opened his own design studio in 1947, quickly becoming one of the most versatile independent designers of his generation.
Throughout his career, Østervig collaborated with leading Scandinavian manufacturers, creating furniture for ships, hotels, cinemas, and nursing homes. His preferred materials included oak, rosewood, teak, and leather, which gave his creations both warmth and durability.
His innovative approach and elegant craftsmanship gained international recognition: Østervig was awarded at the Milan Triennale (1953 and 1960), and in the 1960s, his work was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art in New York — a rare distinction for a Danish designer of his time.
Østervig was also known for the remarkable quality of his drawings, which often looked more like colorful artworks or photographs than simple technical sketches.
Among his most iconic designs are the Model 12 easy chair (1961, reissued in 2014) and the Wing Chair from the 1950s upholstered by Norki, both of which embody the elegance and ingenuity of mid-century Danish design.
Though he remained less publicized than some of his contemporaries, his work is now highly sought after by collectors. Many of his vintage pieces achieve high auction prices, and several of his designs are still produced today by Tranekær Furniture, continuing the legacy of his collaboration with K.P. Jørgensen.
