Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen, born on September 12, 1907 in Aalborg and passed away on October 21, 1993, was a Danish architect and furniture designer regarded as one of the leading figures of 20th-century Scandinavian design. After completing technical training at Aalborg School in 1924, he continued his studies at the School of Arts and Crafts of the Designmuseum in Copenhagen in 1928, before refining his skills under Kaare Klint at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts between 1931 and 1934.

In 1944, he partnered with Peter Hvidt to found the studio Hvidt & Mølgaard. Together, they developed a clean, functional aesthetic, drawing on innovative techniques such as the use of molded laminated wood. Their work played a key role in the rise of exportable Danish furniture thanks to lightweight, elegant, and easy-to-assemble creations. Among their iconic models are the Portex series in 1945 and the famous AX Chair in 1950, produced by Fritz Hansen.

Beyond furniture, their collaboration extended to architecture and industrial design. They designed several buildings in Denmark, such as the headquarters of De Danske Sukkerfabrikker in Copenhagen in 1958, and worked on various collective housing projects during the 1960s and 1970s. Their expertise was also sought for major infrastructures, including the Little Belt Bridge and the Vejle Fjord Bridge.

The creations of Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen and Peter Hvidt gained international recognition and are now part of the permanent collections of prestigious museums such as MoMA in New York, the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne, and the Designmuseum in Copenhagen. Their studio designed more than 250 pieces of furniture before ceasing activities in 1975. While Peter Hvidt passed away in 1986, Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen continued to exert his influence for several more years until his death in 1993.
