Unglazed Terracotta Sculpture – Stefan Holzmüller
This work, typical of this Art Brut ceramist’s creations, is hand-modeled in unglazed terracotta. The hand shapes, stacks, hollows out, and builds the fragments, volumes, and openings of his dreamlike city.
Figures and animals cling to the walls, climb the staircases, nestle in the crevices. They inhabit the material. One imagines, behind the windows, the secrets and the story of the artist’s marvelous world. The towers, the houses, the passageways — everything here seems to emerge from an ancient memory, from stories once told to him by his mother, of which he now offers us a few fragments. WORKSHOP SECRET
The clay, left in its natural colour, plays with the light, revealing the traces of the gesture and the spontaneity of the modelling. Holzmüller does not seek to seduce; his work asserts itself through its raw power, its sincerity, its ability to unsettle our points of reference and awaken in us the nostalgia for a world yet to be invented. He invites us to contemplation, to reverie, to an experience of intimacy as well as of fragility and monumentality.
stefan holzmüller (1949 – 2010)
Originally from Karlsruhe, Germany, Stefan Holzmüller first learned pottery before training in ceramics, eventually earning the title of master craftsman. In 1979, he settled in Grötzingen, where the local municipality provided him with a small house—an act reflecting its support for local artists.
A solitary figure, often seen as unconventional, Holzmüller worked in a studio attached to his house. There, he sculpted clay objects which he fired in his own kiln. Passionate about history, he also collected fragments of Roman pottery and Merovingian coins, gathered during his walks.
Spotted during his lifetime by Jean Dubuffet, his work was included as early as the 1980s in the Collection de l’Art Brut in Lausanne. His studio, a true poetic laboratory, became a meeting place between local craftsmanship and an extraordinary artistic vision. He passed away in February 2010, leaving behind a ceramic legacy of rare intensity.
