Painted and Multicoloured Glazed Terracotta Sculpture – Stefan Holzmüller
In this sculpture by Stefan Holzmüller, the fully glazed terracotta emits a warm, satin-like glow that enhances the vitality of the modeling. The work unfolds on two levels: a dense, organic base populated with human figures intertwined with miniature architectures, topped by a large circular platform—a kind of acropolis—crowned with small houses inhabited by other characters. WORKSHOP SECRET
The play of scale between the figures and the dwellings creates an expressive tension: some characters appear too large for the houses, while others seem to merge with them, as if absorbed by the architecture. Together, they form a living city, animated from within. The palette, dominated by browns, ochres, and soft pinkish beiges, is heightened by the glaze and punctuated with touches of sea green or dark brown that accentuate the reliefs. The circular, slender shape evokes a Mediterranean citadel, a suspended Cycladic village, reflecting the artist’s deep connection to Ancient Greece.
stefan holzmüller (1949 – 2010)
Born in Karlsruhe, Germany, Stefan Holzmüller began with pottery before specializing in ceramics, earning the title of master craftsman. In 1979, he settled in Grötzingen, where the local municipality granted him a small house as a gesture of support for local artists.
A solitary and often seen as an unconventional figure, Holzmüller worked in a studio attached to his home. There, he shaped clay objects that he fired in his own kiln. Passionate about history, he also collected fragments of Roman pottery and Merovingian coins found during his walks.
Spotted during his lifetime by Jean Dubuffet, his work was included from the 1980s in the Collection de l’Art Brut in Lausanne. His studio, a true poetic laboratory, became a crossroads between local craftsmanship and a singular artistic vision. He passed away in February 2010, leaving behind a ceramic legacy of rare intensity.
