WORKSHOP SECRET
The collodion process, a significant 19th-century photographic technique, involved coating a glass plate with collodion (a nitrocellulose solution) and sensitizing it in a silver nitrate solution to create a photosensitive emulsion. The photographer had to work quickly as the plate needed to be exposed while still wet, requiring long exposure times. After exposure, the plate was developed in a darkroom, revealing the latent image, which was then fixed to prevent deterioration.
Pioneers like Nicéphore Niépce, Louis Daguerre, and William Henry Fox Talbot contributed significantly to early photography. Over time, new techniques like gelatin silver emulsions improved sensitivity and stability, leading to black-and-white and color photography.
Modern photographer Griet Van Malderen embraced the collodion technique, experimenting with various plate sizes. After extensive effort, she succeeded in creating a 1m x 1m plate, showcasing the technique's unique aesthetic on a large scale. Her work highlights the continued relevance and artistic potential of historical photographic processes in contemporary art.

Griet VAN MALDEREN, born in 1970 in Flanders, became a wildlife photographer following a safari in South Africa in 2008. Her deep passion for Africa has led her to explore various African countries, as well as Antarctica, Chile, Brazil, Canada, Norway, Tonga, and Japan. She focuses on black-and-white photography, often enhanced with sepia tones, and works with platinum and collodion printing. Her approach is built on earning the trust of her subjects to capture their authentic emotions, which gives her style a distinctly feminine quality. Alongside wildlife, she also captures landscapes and portraits, unveiling their strength and mystery.
