Quattro uomini con uovo e uccello sulla testa – Carlo Zinelli
Created around 1960, this work by Carlo Zinelli depicts four large black silhouettes seated in profile, each on a chair, arranged in a symmetrical, frontal composition. Each figure wears an oval medallion on its head, within which a black bird — a recurring motif in Zinelli’s universe — is depicted. The space is filled with repetitive black motifs, suggesting crowds, trees, or abstract signs, while a vertical frieze of small red figures animates the right-hand border. The absence of perspective, the profusion of signs, and the variation in scale create a ritualistic and hypnotic atmosphere, characteristic of the artist’s early work. Carlo Zinelli®

CARLO ZINELLI (1916 – 1974)
Carlo Zinelli, born on July 2, 1916, in San Giovanni Lupatoto near Verona, is now recognized as a key figure in Art Brut. Orphaned by his mother at age two, he began working in the fields at nine before becoming a butcher’s apprentice in Verona in 1934. Alongside his job, he developed a passion for music and drawing. In 1939, he was sent to fight in the Spanish Civil War, an experience that left him deeply traumatized. Diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, he was permanently institutionalized in 1947. There, he started creating art on hospital walls. In 1957, he joined an art workshop led by sculptor Michael Noble, dedicating his days to painting and producing nearly 2,000 works before his death in 1974.
