Grande cavallo e scala neri · Uomo con pipa su cavallo stellato – Carlo Zinelli
In this double-sided work, the artist’s line—at times dense, at times scratched—oscillates between figuration and abstraction. It embodies the tension between legibility and cryptic expression that characterizes Zinelli’s art.
These two sides of the same support, dated January 21, 1967, bear witness to a moment of heightened intensity in Zinelli’s practice, at the crossroads of automatic drawing and inner theater. Carlo Zinelli®

WORKSHOP SECRET
Created at the height of his artistic maturity, this diptych brings together Carlo Zinelli’s graphic and symbolic obsessions. On one side, a fragmented animal silhouette—half-horse, half-machine—appears as if drawn from a hallucinatory dream, set within a shattered landscape where signs, onomatopoeia, and figures intertwine.
The other side reveals a grotesque rider with distorted features, mounted on the same steed marked by a star, a recurring emblem in the artist's work. The composition is structured around Zinelli’s signature motifs: repetition, the layering of phonetic words (“RRRRR,” “MAAAA”), and the distortion of bodies contribute to a unique visual language that merges narration, traumatic memory, and mental space.
CARLO ZINELLI (1916 – 1974)
Carlo Zinelli was born in 1916 in San Giovanni Lupatoto. Losing his mother at two, he worked in the fields as a child before becoming a butcher’s apprentice in Verona, where he discovered a passion for drawing. In 1939, he fought briefly in the Spanish Civil War, which left him psychologically scarred. After years of instability, he was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia and permanently hospitalized in 1947. There, Zinelli began painting on the hospital walls. In 1957, he joined an art workshop under Michael Noble and dedicated his days to creation. He produced nearly 2,000 works before his death in 1974, leaving a lasting impact on Art Brut.
