Grande uomo con fez e figure neri – Carlo Zinelli
This work demonstrates Zinelli’s ability to merge writing and image, memory and invention, within a space where scales shift freely: totemic human figures stand alongside small sketched forms, while crosses and houses evoke a personal mythology blending childhood memories, references to war, and rural life. The deep black of the gouache, contrasting with the white of the paper, enhances the graphic strength and narrative density. The repetition of motifs and the profusion of signs create a visual polyphony. Carlo Zinelli®

WORKSHOP SECRET
This double-sided composition by Carlo Zinelli, executed almost entirely in black gouache, reveals the power of the artist’s graphic universe. The first side unfolds a landscape where stylized human silhouettes, crosses, houses, and abstract motifs intertwine, bathed in a dense flow of calligraphic inscriptions that seem to dance across the paper. The monumental figure appears to engage in a dialogue with a multitude of signs and forms that, arranged without perspective, create an atmosphere that is both mysterious and ritualistic.
On the reverse side, once again, Carlo Zinelli’s figure dominates the scene, accompanied by small walking characters, crosses, animals, and stacked logs. The line is confident and assertive, and the calligraphic motifs, interspersed with fragments of words and phrases, animate the surface with a wave-like, almost musical movement.
CARLO ZINELLI (1916 – 1974)
A key figure in Art Brut, Carlo Zinelli was born in 1916 near Verona. After a tough childhood—losing his mother and working from an early age—he became a butcher’s apprentice while nurturing a passion for drawing. Drafted into the Spanish Civil War in 1939, he returned traumatized. Diagnosed with schizophrenia, he was institutionalized in 1947. Within the hospital, Zinelli began to express himself artistically, first by drawing on walls. In 1957, he joined an art workshop led by Michael Noble, where he created with remarkable intensity, producing nearly 2,000 works. He passed away in 1974, now celebrated as a central Art Brut artist.
