Grande cappello da alpino stellato · Grande cappello e croce rossi – Carlo Zinelli
This double-sided painting by Carlo Zinelli, created with gouache and pencil, pays tribute to the caregivers at the psychiatric hospital where he spent much of his life. On the front, a large red figure faces a cross, surrounded by repetitive inscriptions, including the name "Mario". This figure represents the "fractured Carlo," both vulnerable and resilient. On the reverse, a large red hat adorned with a white star sits above the word "Rama," a playful nickname given by his psychiatrist. Blending symbols, words, and sounds, this intimate work reflects Zinelli’s poetic world and the deep human connections that shaped it. Carlo Zinelli®

Réf : PTRE47
Carlo Zinelli, born in 1916 near Verona, lost his mother at an early age and began working as a child. In 1934, he became an apprentice butcher while nurturing a passion for drawing and music. Sent to Spain in 1939, he returned deeply traumatized by the experience. Diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, he was institutionalized in 1947 and turned to art as a refuge, initially covering the hospital walls with his drawings. In 1957, he joined an art therapy workshop led by Michael Noble, marking the beginning of an intensely productive period. Now recognized as a major figure in Art Brut, Zinelli created nearly two thousand works before his death in 1974.
