Long perceived as the guardian of an immutable Alpine tradition, the architect Henry Jacques Le Même emerges, with a century of hindsight, as the true inventor of high-altitude modernity. This season, Maison Norki chooses to celebrate this visionary genius through a singular interpretation, where the codes of the « leisure chalet » engage in a dialogue with contemporary art and iconic furniture pieces.

Before the advent of Henry Jacques Le Même (1897–1997), the chalet was merely a mountain farm—a purely utilitarian structure dictated by the harshness of the climate. The turning point occurred in 1926 when Baroness Noémie de Rothschild commissioned him to build her residence in Megève. Le Même then invented a revolutionary concept: the chalet de plaisance.

His approach was a masterpiece of balance. While preserving the external envelope evocative of Savoyard rurality, he transmuted the interior into a bourgeois sanctuary. The very structure of his works bears witness to a rare constructive intelligence: a masonry stone base to defy humidity, topped by a timber superstructure. A contemporary of Le Corbusier, he nonetheless rejected the dogma of cold raw concrete, preferring to adapt the modernist vocabulary to the vernacular context.

His signature lies in a surgical precision of detail:

The Centered Plan: The space is articulated around a majestic hearth or a sculptural staircase, creating a fluid and organic circulation.
The Conquest of Light: Breaking with the darkness of traditional farms, he introduced large bay windows that frame the peaks like master canvases.
Scholarly Standardization: Even the pitch of the roofs, calculated for optimal management of snow weight, is designed for harmony.
Polychromy: Far from the austerity of brown wood, he loved to puncture his facades with bright red or emerald green shutters—a chromatic audacity that Norki particularly appreciates.

Detail as Manifesto: The Mageva Rug and Collection Furniture

At the heart of this reflection, our Mageva rug and its matching cushions are not mere accessories, but structural homages. The crenelated cut-work, an emblematic motif of Le Même’s facades, is here declined in a textile composition of great density. Each line evokes the gesture of the craftsman carving wood, transforming the floor into a pictorial plane.

To complete this curation, we have selected pieces from our vintage collection: the armchairs by Carl Gustav Hiort. Their sculptural silhouette and organic presence find an obvious resonance within this architectural framework. Here, the object does not merely dress the space; it structures it and endows it with a soul.

In reinventing the legacy of Henry Jacques Le Même, Maison Norki does not merely look to the past. We celebrate an architecture that successfully transformed poor rural housing into a symbol of international luxury, without ever betraying the soul of Savoy. It is this vision of authentic and sensitive luxury that we continue to infuse into every Norki creation.

The Norki Reinterpretation: A Dialogue Between Eras and Materials

Reinterpreting Le Même’s style without falling into pastiche is a high-wire act. Faithful to our architectural signature, we have designed a scenography where the master’s rigor meets the impertinence of current art. In this reinvented Megevan chalet, we have introduced works with powerful magnetism. Christophe Gaignon’s mirror, a veritable celestial body of glass, dialogues with a monumental ceramic wall installation by Morgane Salmon. These bursts of strong colors and vibrant textures challenge the linearity of the wood, creating a visual tension dear to our House.
