Founded in 1943 by Ingvar Kamprad, IKEA is a globally renowned Swedish company known for its innovative concept of flat-pack, self-assembly furniture. The founding idea of IKEA stems from Ingvar Kamprad's vision of making modern interior design accessible to everyone.
The name IKEA is an acronym formed from the initials of Ingvar Kamprad, the name of the farm where he grew up (Elmtaryd), and the nearby village (Agunnaryd). Starting from its humble beginnings as a company selling small items in Älmhult, IKEA has become a global icon of affordable furniture, recognized for its functional design and economical flat packaging.
Certain vintage pieces produced by IKEA between the 1950s and 1990s are currently experiencing a surge in popularity, despite the sometimes moderate commercial success they had upon release. Among these are the Impala chair by Gillis Lundgren, the Amiral chair by Karin Mobring, and the Åke armchair. Nicknamed "the first lady of IKEA design," Karin Mobring made her mark with some of the brand's most iconic pieces, including the Amiral chair launched in 1970. This chair is distinguished by its tubular steel frame and thick leather upholstery.
Gillis Lundgren, the inventor of flat-pack furniture and designer of the famous Billy bookcase, created the Impala chair for IKEA in 1972. This chair, evoking the 1970s with its tubular structure, low-slung profile, and comfortable curves, is now one of the most sought-after pieces by collectors. A unique piece that we have sourced and restored in our Norki workshop.
Our vintage pieces are unique. Most of this vintage furniture is not reissued and requires meticulous research and "sourcing". Contact us if you are interested in a piece similar to those already sold.
