WORKSHOP SECRET
The Åke armchair is one of the oldest models produced by the famous Swedish company IKEA.
Produced between 1952 and 1956, its design was inspired by Arnold Madsen's Clam Chair (long attributed to designer Philip Arctander), although the exact identity of its creator remains unknown to this day.
Founded in 1943 by Ingvar Kamprad, is a Swedish company famous for its do-it-yourself kit furniture. The name IKEA comes from the founder's initials and the names of his farm (Elmtaryd) and the nearby village (Agunnaryd).
Some vintage pieces from the 1950s-1990s, such as Gillis Lundgren's Impala armchair and Karin Mobring's Admiral armchair, are highly sought-after today. Mobring, nicknamed ‘the first lady of IKEA design’, created iconic pieces, while Lundgren, inventor of the kit furniture, created much sought-after retro designs.
